We the People

Description:

We the People began as a pandemic project. Inspired by the Speakers Corner in Hyde Park, London and created in response to the violence and vitriol of national politics, I made a few hundred clay bricks. I put out a call for participation on social media and held We the People carving gatherings on socially distanced picnic tables in my driveway, and left stacks of plastic wrapped bricks on my front porch for carvers to take with them to carve. Participants carved their version of We the People onto the bricks. After they were fired, I installed the bricks in front of Scottsdale City Hall, Phoenix City Hall, and at other locations in area. While they were installed in Scottsdale, community members read stories of citizenship, community, poetry, and made speeches, and we all benefited from civil discourse.
