Upheaval series
2017, Belger Crane Yard Gallery
Upheaval series, 2017: This body of work originated during a residency at Belger Crane Yard Studios. The residency came with a roomful of clay-filled barrels, all at my disposal. My working process derives from experimentation and exploration, process drifts, starts and stops, and a love of the physics and origins of the material. The generosity of the folks at the Crane Yard in providing so much clay for me to use, allowed unfettered exploration, resulting in an upheaval of sorts. I found new ways to express emotion, process, and transformation through the material. The forms derive from natural growth patterns, historical moments of revolution, all filtered through the visual vocabulary of the vessel. The surfaces result from the intersection of chemistry, material, experimentation and risk.
